The Role
Supervises the delivery of nursing services/care in the resident care unit in the long-term care home. Ensures the delivery of person-centred care that maximizes residents’ independence and supports their physical and emotional well-being. Supervises an interdisciplinary team in a 24/7 environment, with a focus on customer service and a restorative care philosophy.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Supervises an interdisciplinary team including Team Leaders, Registered Nurses, Registered Practical Nurses, and Personal Support Workers. Supports Team Leaders in coordinating, assigning, and performance monitoring the team. Oversees significant performance issues.
- Supervises day-to-day administration of resident care services. Audits to ensure completion/
accuracy of resident health records and documentation practices, including RAI observation in client care documentation system. - Coordinates planning and replacement of staff to ensure coverage. Checks, approves, and inputs payroll submissions.
- Develops and implements resident care quality assurance programs and audits, and assists in implementing long-range resident care planning. Provides input into policies.
- Participates in/leads clinical programs (e.g., continence management, medical equipment use, skin care).
- Provides staff training in the use of lifts, transfers, and related equipment. Works with the Education Coordinator to ensure staff orientation and annual education requirements are met. Participates in providing education programs for the unit (e.g., fire and safety, special education events, orientation, ongoing education).
- In collaboration with admissions and social work staff, screens and approves resident applications; and provides backup admission, discharge, and transfer functions.
- Ensures infection control procedures are maintained with the staff education and infection control staff; and provides backup for infection control coordination and student placements.
- Assists the Manager in planning staff workload. Develops time schedules for resident care staff. Promotes a team environment within/between units and staff. Participates in the administration of resident care services, and contributes to short- and long-term planning. Conducts needs assessments, recommends and assists in developing in-service programs, monitors staff attendance, and adapts programs.
- Ensures staff follow procedures for handling and control of medications, including narcotic and control drugs. Reviews medication incidents and follows up with staff. Liaises with pharmacy to ensure service delivery.
Additional Duties/Responsibilities
- Ensures staff complete assessments, develop care plans and programs, and implement same.
- Investigates family, resident, and volunteer complaints, and takes corrective actions. Involves authorities when staff rights are violated, and collaborates with Labour Relations. Attends contract negotiations, conciliations, and arbitrations as required.
- Completes/updates high intensity needs applications and critical incident reports and ensures follow up. Assists in resident quality inspection reviews with the Ministry; provides documentation to inspectors.
- Collaborates with HR regarding individualized staff return to work plans, early intervention, injury prevention, insurance claims, and hiring of new staff.
- Participates on external committees and belongs to professional organizations. Collaborates with external agencies (e.g., geriatric services, community care centres, hospices, hospitals, public health, educational institutions) for patient care.
- Maintains and assists in the development of resident care policies and procedures.
- Administers contracts for products and services (e.g., continence, physiotherapy, medical and equipment supplies, pharmacy, dentistry, clinical).
- Provides input into the resident care budget. Monitors expenditures and informs Manager of potential over-expenditure. Ensures equipment is used appropriately and safely.
- Liaises with other divisional staff. Exchanges information regarding resident care with physicians. Assists pharmacist with narcotic destruction and delivery procedures and audits. Has contact with other long term care homes and hospitals for admissions, referrals, and networking.
- Backs up the Manager as required.
- Performs related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of resident care and gerontological nursing, psychogeriatric and palliative care, long-term care, recreational and physical therapy, and community resources, acquired through of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing, or equivalent education in the Health Sciences disciplines, plus related experience.
- Must have current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse.
- Ability to plan and develop objectives including administrative, technical, operational, and financial components normally acquired through a certificate program in management and progressively responsible management experience.
- Knowledge of and ability to comply with policies, procedures, and related legislation (e.g., long-term care homes, health and safety, mental health, privacy, personal health information protection).
- Assessment, analytical, problem solving and continuous improvement skills to organize and coordinate staff activities to achieve established goals and objectives; and develop, make recommendations, implement, and evaluate new methods, activities, procedures, and programs.
- Leadership, human relations, and communication skills to supervise, train, develop, motivate, and support staff; resolve conflict; respond to complaints and inquiries from residents, families, and designated decision-makers, and participate as an effective team member.
- Ability to read and interpret journals, books, newsletters, correspondence, charts, reports, resident files, policy and procedure manuals, collective agreements, and employment applications. Ability to write reports, minutes, labour relations documentation, and performance appraisals.
- Computer skills with ability to use software such as Microsoft Office and a time and attendance system.
- A tuberculosis (TB) test and annual influenza immunization are required.
- Must provide an acceptable Police Vulnerable Sector Check (Level 3).
- Ability to participate in an official standby/on-call rotation to respond to legislated or time sensitive demands beyond regularly scheduled work hours.
- Ability to travel within Waterloo Region.
- Ability to implement and monitor compliance with the Departmental vision and philosophy for integrated customer service delivery within the division, across divisions, across departments, and within the broader community.
