The Role
Transports hot food wagons to/from dining areas, and plates/portions food for tenants; cleans/sanitizes pots and other kitchen equipment; and de-cases/pulls supplies for storage. Assists Cook with food preparation (e.g., mincing, grinding).
Duties/Responsibilities
- Cleans, sanitizes, and stores pots, pans and utensils.
- Disposes of kitchen garbage through garbage compactor. Cleans and sanitizes garbage containers and dollies used to transport containers.
- Transports (by pushing) hot food wagons to dining areas throughout Sunnyside Home and to Supportive Housing building. Returns wagons to kitchen after service.
- Cleans and sanitizes hot food wagons, large cooking equipment, including the steam jacketted kettles, and work areas, including sink, counter, and floors; and as part of large cleaning projects.
- Transports soiled kitchen/dining room linen to the laundry area.
- Assists Cook with food preparation (e.g., pulling/panning, mincing, grinding, cleaning vegetables).
- Plates/portions entrees, soup, cereal, beverages and desserts for clients.
- Participates in dietary staff In-Service education programs and special committees, including quality assurance and fire safety.
- Participates in internal audits or inspections, as required.
- Unpacks supplies/products for storage/daily use.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of reading, writing, math, food preparation skills, and safe food handling practices, acquired through a Grade 12 education, completion/enrollment in a food services program (e.g., food service worker certificate, cook certificate, food and nutrition diploma), current Safe Food Handling Certificate, plus related experience (or equivalent combination of education/certification and experience).
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. - Knowledge of Regional and Divisional policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- A tuberculosis (TB) test and annual influenza immunization are required.
- Communication and interpersonal skills to respond pleasantly and professionally to demands; interact with staff, residents, tenants, and families and have a basic understanding of the geriatric population; and participate as an effective team member.
- Ability to read menus, meeting minutes, safety and quality assurance forms, policy and procedures manuals. Ability to write supply lists and complete forms for safety and quality assurance audits.
- Ability to work shifts, weekend hours, and statutory holidays, as scheduled.
- Must provide an acceptable Police Vulnerable Sector Check (level 3).
- Ability to support and project the Region’s values.
