The Role

Transports hot food wagons to and from dining areas and plates and portions food, primarily for supportive living tenants. Cleans and sanitizes pots and other kitchen equipment and de-cases/pulls supplies for storage. Assists cooks with food preparation (e.g., mincing, grinding). 

Works as part of a multi-disciplinary team to create a caring, person-centred, homelike environment where residents feel listened to and cared about. 

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Cleans, sanitizes, and stores pots, pans, and utensils.
  • Disposes of kitchen garbage through garbage compactor. Cleans and sanitizes garbage containers and dollies used to transport containers.
  • Transports hot food wagons to dining areas throughout home and to supportive housing building. Returns wagons to kitchen after service.
  • Cleans and sanitizes hot food wagons, large cooking equipment (e.g., steam jacketed kettles), work areas (e.g., sink, counter, floors), and as part of large cleaning projects. 
  • Transports soiled kitchen/dining room linen to the laundry area.
  • Assists cooks with food preparation (e.g., pulling, panning, mincing, grinding, cleaning vegetables). 
  • Plates and portions entrees, soup, cereal, beverages, and desserts for tenants. 
  • Unpacks supplies and products for storage and daily use. Checks items on invoices against goods received.
  • Operates kitchen/delivery equipment appropriately, maintains it in good working condition, and contacts Facilities for repairs. Reports safety issues/risks immediately and takes appropriate action.
  • Receives work assignments from supervisor and work tasks from cooks and food production coordinator as required.
  • Interacts with staff, residents, families, and visitors to respond to general questions, discuss operational needs and logistics, and request supplies or services. Contacts appropriate staff for assistance as needed. 
  • Keeps knowledge current through in-service training and communications. Demonstrates/explains work procedures to help train volunteers and/or new staff as directed. 
  • Participates in team meetings and provides input to improve work procedures.
  • Participates in internal audits or inspections as required.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of reading, writing, math, food preparation skills, and safe food handling practices, acquired through a Grade 12 education, completion/enrollment in a food services program (e.g., food service worker certificate, cook certificate, food and nutrition), plus related experience.
  • Must hold a current Safe Food Handling Certificate.
  • Must have a tuberculosis (TB) test and required immunization(s).
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions in English.
  • Knowledge of and ability to comply with policies, procedures, guidelines, and related legislation (e.g. privacy, health and safety).
  • Ability to demonstrate compassion, validate emotions, support dignity, and promote understanding of those who we serve. 
  • Communication and interpersonal skills to respond pleasantly and professionally to demands and interactions with other staff, residents, tenants, visitors, and families; demonstrate a customer care/service approach; and participate as an effective team member.
  • Ability to read menus, meeting minutes, safety and quality assurance forms, policy and procedures manuals. Ability to write supply lists and complete forms for safety and quality assurance audits.
  • Ability to work shifts, weekend hours, and statutory holidays as scheduled.
  • Must provide an acceptable vulnerable sector police check.
  • Ability to support and demonstrate the Region’s values.
