Duties/Responsibilities

  • Supports the Region’s Energy Conservation Office with conserving energy and implementing renewable and sustainable energy infrastructure. 
  • Supports the team in performing energy audits and greenhouse gas reduction assessments of regional buildings. 
  • Uses energy modelling software along with energy engineering principles to support the team in decision-making with respect to new high efficiency and low greenhouse gas technologies.
  • Supports the team in data reporting through energy data analysis, interpretation, and report writing.  Uses Excel spreadsheets and other tools. Analyzes monthly and yearly building energy usage and costs. Identifies outliers in energy consumption and opportunities for energy savings. 
  • Supports the Energy Conservation Office with internal client requests for informational and technical advice and provides client service excellence.
  • Supports measurement and verification tasks by helping with the installation of various tools and metering equipment to gather and verify the achievement of expected energy savings.  
  • Works in a standard office environment approximately 80% of the time, and at regional facilities approximately 20% of the time requiring regular/weekly travel. 
  • Follows legislation and exercises safety precautions when visiting sites.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge is acquired through current enrollment in a college or university program in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Energy Management.
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of energy conservation, energy efficiency technologies, building mechanical and electrical systems, energy management software.
  • General knowledge of building design and construction principles.
  • Time management skills and ability to prioritize work, both as a team member and independently, to meet deadlines and achieve results.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills that demonstrate a clear client-centric mindset and ability to work as an effective team member. 
  • Hands-on technical experience and capability with programming meters, data loggers, and other instrumentation for energy auditing, measurement, and verification purposes.
  • Computer skills using Microsoft Office and energy modeling software (e.g., RETScreen and Helioscope). Excel skills using formulas and working with large amounts of data (e.g. pivot tables, pivot charts, v-lookups).
  • Analytical, research, and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to travel within Waterloo Region.
  • Ability to support and demonstrate the Region’s values.

To be considered for employment as a student, a person must be: registered as a full-time secondary or post-secondary student in an accredited institution, or currently recognized as having full-time status by the academic institution but applying for a school vacation, practicum or work term, or returning to full-time studies in the next academic term.
