Duties/Responsibilities
- Under the guidance of the Regional Forester, assists with data collection as part of a civil asset inventory that will support asset management planning.
- Conducts invasive species monitoring and management and basic forest health evaluations across Regional Forest tracts.
- Supports data management activities by digitizing, organizing and analyzing various data sources to inform the Regional Forester’s reporting activities.
- Contributes to forest stewardship and outreach initiatives by assisting with tree planting, site restoration projects, trail inspections, and public or stakeholder engagement activities as required.
- Uses forestry tools (e.g., GPS, laser rangefinder, calipers, diameter tape).
- Provides notetaking and administrative support during internal staff engagement exercises.
- Takes precautions to mitigate risks associated with working outdoors (e.g., weather, uneven terrain).
- Travels to sites daily and spends approximately 80% of the time outdoors and 20% of the time in an office environment.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge and skills in general forestry and horticultural practices, tree identification, tree risk assessment, and invasive species are acquired through current enrolment in a related program (e.g., Forestry Technician).
- Knowledge of and ability to comply with policies, procedures, standards, regulations, and legislation.
- Analytical, research, organizational, and problem-solving skills to collect and analyse inventory data and make recommendations for management options.
- Ability to work independently.
- Curiosity and eagerness to learn.
- Communication skills to obtain, clarify, and provide information to regional staff and peer groups; present data findings; support presentations and workshops; and participate as an effective team member.
- Computer skills using software such as Microsoft Office, Acrobat Reader, GIS, and GPS programs.
- Ability to travel within Waterloo Region.
- Ability to work outside in all weather conditions.
- Ability to support and demonstrate the Region’s values.

To be considered for employment as a student, a person must be: registered as a full-time secondary or post-secondary student in an accredited institution, or currently recognized as having full-time status by the academic institution but applying for a school vacation, practicum or work term, or returning to full-time studies in the next academic term. Students who are in their final year of academic study and who are not intending to return to full-time studies are eligible for student employment up until the time they convocate. Students participating in education and retraining programs at the post- secondary level, though not full-time students, are eligible for related student employment opportunities, where appropriate.
