Duties/Responsibilities

  • Assists in all facets of water distribution system maintenance including corrective, reactive, and preventive maintenance, with special emphasis on requirements stipulated by the Ministry of the Environment. 
  • Assists to test distribution chlorine residuals in treated water.
  • Maintains the regional water services GIS portal which includes locating various distribution system assets. 
  • Prolonged stooping and kneeling are required when repairing and painting of hydrants, sample stations, auto-flushers, valves, etc. 
  • Performs work outside 95% of the time, sometimes on roadsides. Takes precautions to mitigate risks associated with weather, noise, traffic, vibration from vehicles, dust, dirt, and odours. 
  • Wears safety boots and standard issue work clothes at all times and wears safety helmets, gloves, goggles, sunscreen, and standard issue reflective clothing for outdoor work. 
  • Performs related duties as assigned. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Basic mechanical, mathematics, and science aptitude is normally acquired through a secondary school education and current enrollment in a post-secondary program.
  • Holds a valid Operator-in-Training (OIT) certificate to participate in water treatment/distribution.
  • Ability to work independently. 
  • Ability to read and follow written directions. 
  • Proficient in the use of computers. 
  • Ability to communicate verbally with supervisor, co-workers, and occasionally with the public. Ability to participate as an effective team member.
  • Must have a valid G driver's license (or G2 with 3 years of driving experience) and acceptable driving record to operate corporate vehicles.  
  • Ability to support and demonstrate the Region’s values.

To be considered for employment as a student, a person must be: registered as a full-time secondary or post-secondary student in an accredited institution, or currently recognized as having full-time status by the academic institution but applying for a school vacation, practicum or work term, or returning to full-time studies in the next academic term. Students who are in their final year of academic study and who are not intending to return to full-time studies are eligible for student employment up until the time they convocate. Students participating in education and retraining programs at the post- secondary level, though not full-time students, are eligible for related student employment opportunities, where appropriate.
