Radio System Support Technologist

Summary

Provides technical and operational support to the Waterloo Region P25 radio network. Ensures vendor contract compliance, supports maintenance program(s), conducts technical investigations, and completes both preventative and corrective maintenance to ensure system users have a high grade of service with both subscriber and infrastructure equipment. 

You Will:

  • Routinely work within a team to identify and resolve any technical and/or operational issues; may occasionally take lead on issue, or work with branch to develop strategies and technical solutions.
  • Ensure contract compliance with vendor(s); this includes vetting quality of contractor work; investigating symptomatic issues with system users; and develop and enforce standards for subscriber equipment.
  • Assume technical lead with the design, construction, vetting, and implementation of technical solutions for subscriber equipment; work with radio branch, system users, vendors, and contractors to implement solutions as needed.
  • Works within a team to support with radio infrastructure related activities; this includes, but is not limited to: network maintenance, coverage testing and compliance, interference investigations and performing both corrective and preventative maintenance on radio system as required.
  • Routinely work with Radio Systems Coordinator to ensure that all system user assets are tracked and maintained with a high degree of compliance; work with IT Service Desk and CAD team to ensure information vital to public safety operations remains valid and accurate.
  • Work with vendors to intake and process return merchandise authorization of subscriber and infrastructure equipment as necessary; work with radio branch to schedule, supervise, and restore radio equipment and/or associated services.
  • Provides secondary support to Radio System Infrastructure Technologists on ancillary radio subsystems such as network infrastructure, voice recording, air traffic, microwave/MPLS circuits, fire hall alerting, and fire paging systems, backup radios, and specialized police systems.
  • Identifies and prioritizes faults or failures within the radio system, and/or related subscriber equipment.
  • Works as part of a team of system users to lead, research, and implement technical solutions for operational requirements.
  • Completes repairs and/or replaces faulty components, or identifies, contacts, and coordinates appropriate contractor(s) to complete requisite repairs as needed.
  • May occasionally participate in scheduled and/or emergency after-hours support to police members, public safety users, and participating radio system users, as well as coordinating contractor(s) to resolve infrastructure issues as required.
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned

You Have:

  • Two (2) year College Diploma in Computer Systems Technician, Electronics Engineering Technician, or an acceptable proof of specialized training in the field of Radio Maintenance or Repair, or related field required.
  • Minimum three (3) years of prior experience working on Land Mobile Radio (LMR) networks with demonstrated technical knowledge of their infrastructure, network typology and the end-user devices.
  • Experience working on public safety grade radio systems that conform to the APCO25 standard is preferred.
  • Working knowledge and experience on 700/800 MHz trunked P25 radio systems, including experience with Motorola APX series subscriber equipment is a valuable asset.
  • Progressive experience working directly with APCO25 subscriber equipment; this includes having in-depth knowledge on functionality, features and limitations, configuration, RF theory, and best practices with both portable and mobile radios.
  • Progressive experience working directly with radio infrastructure, including: Windows/Unix based servers and clients, voice traffic routers, site controllers, repeaters, specialized radio networking equipment, voice recording systems, event management software, service utility programs, oscilloscopes, and multi-meters and associated programming software.
  • Working knowledge of all sub-system components within radio systems and their inter-relationships including microwave, mobile, portable, base radios, fire hall alerting systems, fire pagers, diesel generators, standby and back-up power systems, alarm reporting system, telephone and radio system switches, dispatch computers, towers, consoles and related radio equipment including installation, programming, maintenance, and repair of mobile and portable radio and mobile data devices.
  • Organizational skills required to adapt to changing conditions and shifting priorities while ensuring task deadlines are met.
  • Communication skills required to be able to interact with members of all organizational levels with diplomacy and tact, to convey detailed information to voice radio system users and explain implications, and to communicate with staff and equipment suppliers and representatives from outside agencies.
  • Valid Class G Ontario driver’s license with no more than six (6) demerit points required to travel within and outside of the Region.

  • Able to drive police vehicle in inclement weather conditions while operating and testing voice radio equipment and monitoring traffic conditions.
  • Able to meet police security clearance requirements and to maintain confidentiality.
  • Able to participate as an effective team member and to support and project values compatible with the organization.
  • Able to meet testing requirements for the position.
